I read that and hope it does prevent some from using coupons and then maybe there will be more deals for those of us that are smarter than that person...I wish there had been a comment spot after I read that because I wanted to tell them they are an idiot

Agreed, Deb. Plus, I think if I'd been a new couponer that article would've been very discouraging. The author's tone really doesn't leave any room for her to say that any shopper could be a successful couponer. In her mind, coupons = complete waste of time. I'll bet she was the lady I offered the $2 wipe coupon to at Walmart the other day (making them FREE) and she turned me down.

Ok this whole article is ridiculous and this person is obviously NOT coupon educated lol
Here is my rebuttle
They say:
1. You have to buy a newspaper.
This doesn't apply to any free coupons you happen to get along with products or in the mail, but once you pay for a newspaper, you've lost money. You then have to make up for that loss by using enough coupons to break even. Then, you have to use even more coupons to come out ahead. And that doesn't even account for the value of the time you spend clipping and organizing them.
I say:
1. You DO NOT have to purchase a newspaper but the savings far out weigh the cost should you chose this as a great source for coupons. Its true that the Sunday edition of your big city newspaper holds valuable coupons. And if your like me, you count the cost of the papers in your grocery budget
There are many other ways to get your newspaper coupons though. Friends and family who only get the paper to read it, they can send the coupons your way
and there is always diving for your own coupons where its not illegal. Or instead of purchasing a whole paper, there are many online clipping services where you can get ONLY the coupons you will need. There are also TONS of online printable coupons, coupons by mail and many other sources to gather your savings coupons!
They say:
2. Clipping coupons takes time.
Yes, you can do it while you watch TV and turn "unproductive" time into "productive" time. But there are a lot of things you can do while you watch TV - mop the floor, prepare a week's worth of meals or actually let yourself relax and not do anything for once. Your time might be better spent on another activity.
I say:
2. When you get new coupons do a quick flip though and quickly clip any that are for FREE items or those you know you will use fairly quickly. then if you file your coupon inserts the day you get them, there will be no need to clip them till there is a great sale that you can combine the coupons with. MyPriceSavings.com is a great tool for telling you when the time is right to clip and then it only takes a few minutes. A few minutes a week to save over $50 easily is like me getting paid to clip
What other activity will pay you do have fun doing it
They say:
3. Getting a newspaper invites lots of additional advertising into your home.
Advertising is powerful stuff - this is part of the reason why companies offer coupons in the first place. You might actually end up buying more stuff by having all those ads around, negating any savings you get from coupons. The same is true if a coupon compels you to venture into a store you wouldn't
otherwise visit.
I say:
3. There are people who jump right into couponing thinking they have to use every coupon all at once and this is not true. When armed with a great savings resource such as MPS, we will educate you on the best times to use those coupons and when you can expect those items to go on sale again. Knowing the sales cycles will prevent you from just using your coupons willy nilly, savings you even more!. There is a strong misconception that you use coupons for stuff they wouldn't have normally purchased costing you more money. There are many many products that we have gotten to try for free or very cheap bc of coupons and for this I am thankful. Wouldn't you want to try a new product for FREE then to find out you like it or may not like it rather than throwing $5 away...? I have also been paid to take some of these great products home. Also many of the savings comes from stores you would never guess and many of those stores are ones you are already passing by on a daily basis! So shopping at stores you may not have opens your world to an abundance of savings!
They say:
4. Many of the coupons will be for things you neither need nor want.
Unfortunately, coupon circulars aren't customized to your shopping habits. If you are a die-hard bargain hunter, if may be hard for you to turn down a good deal, even if it means buying something you weren't planning on getting anyway. However, from a financial perspective, buying more than you need or want just doesn't make sense.
I say:
4. I cannot help but laugh at number 4. Has this person done any research??!
With just a few small changes in your shopping habits you could be adding your money to savings rather than wasting it. Just shopping within the sales and actually shopping consciously rather than just throwing whatever your heart desires in that cart will provide you an abundance of savings. You can save more than you know by shopping according to sales and stocking up when the prices are great. You don't need to get 20 of one item unless that is you will use 20 before that item will be at rock bottom price again. But if toothpaste is free this week with a coupon and you have 3 coupons. Why not get 3. Do you need 3 right now..no. But you will go through 3 in the next few weeks/months..YES and bc you stocked up when it was free you will not be a slave to paying retail thus saving you time and money. Here at MPS you determine what price You will pay!
They say:
5. Coupons can tempt you to spend your grocery dollars on things you shouldn't.
Coupons don't always market the healthiest foods. This might mean that they'll lead you to buy things that aren't very good for you. Anyone can see that clipping coupons that tempt you to purchase sugary cereals and fatty or salty snacks isn't the greatest thing for your health. If your idea of a healthy snack is more "I'll have an apple" and less "I'll just have one serving of potato chips," you're unlikely to find much in the coupon circulars at all that will interest you. The "fruits and veggies" section of your coupon organizer is going to be a lonely place. Do you really want an incentive to bring more junk food into the house? Plus, if you have a monthly grocery budget that you stick to no matter what, coupons will only get you more food or different food - they won't truly save you any money.
I say:
5. Here we go again. This person has obviously done no research! There are more and more coupons made available for organic products and produce items, even coupons saving you money dairy!! I have seen coupons for milk and cheese on a regular basis. While its true there are many coupons for items you are already buying there are coupons for stuff you are not buying and not all of it is healthy. Just bc there is a coupon for it does not mean buy it. I have learned that even if chocolate is free with a coupon. I don't need to get it
Couponing is a learning process to truly get the best value from it. Over time you learn tips and tricks and you will NOT be spending your money on junk unless you were going to buy it anyway in this case it will just be cheaper for you! But just basing your weekly meals on what is on sale that week will alone save you more money than you know. If apples are on sale ... buy apples at a reduced price this week not oranges that are full price. There are many ways to save yourself money that are easy to do without coupons. Using coupons strategically will ENHANCE the savings all the more
They say:
6. The same coupons tend to be offered over and over again.
After a few months of coupon clipping, you'll realize that you're repeatedly clipping the same coupons. This might work for you if you use the same products repeatedly, but it's not so great if you prefer variety and experimentation. You often won't use all the coupons you clip by their expiration date, so you'll have to toss that yogurt coupon that expired on June 30 only to clip another identical one that doesn't expire until July 31. This is time consuming - not to mention aggravating. The redundancy of coupons is especially annoying if the coupons are for items you don't even want to buy.
I say:
6. If the coupons are for items you buy on a regular basis this is good news! SO you don't use every coupon before it expires....not to worry bc next week there will be another one waiting for you to grab and save! This is great for you will NEVER pay full price for these items again! And there are new and great products coming out all the time. This is a great time for a company to feature there new product on sale and most times a coupon will come out for this item inciting you to try it. Coupon paired with a great sale and the savings can be outstanding! Many of the FREE items I have in my pantry are from brand new items. Why not try one for FREE or really cheap. Coupons have allowed me to get name brand items and to try new items that I would otherwise not have gotten the chance to for pennies.
They say:
7. You might become a slave to coupons.
It can be very difficult to buy something without a coupon once you get used to using coupons. Knowing that you can get ice cream for $2.50 might make it difficult for you to spend $4 on it even though many times, it would be worth it to spend the extra $1.50 rather than pine for ice cream and cast longing glances at your freezer every night for three weeks until your next coupon arrives. You might also find yourself making more trips to the grocery store in order to purchase things only when you have coupons for them.
I say:
7. Wow. Well for me I actually barley shop once a week. Talk about saving money!! After a few months of couponing you will realize that there are many many items you will be checking off your list. You simply won't need em till the next sale. Bc you have strategically shopped assuring you grabbed enough for a few weeks you will not find yourself running out of an item. Most people go to make dinner, whatever sounds good to them only to find they are missing some key ingredients. Then run up to the store to grab those few items they need. Then they come out with a full cart and over $100 bc they shopped hungry and based on need. When you stop shopping based on need and shop according to the sales you will save yourself a lot of added stress and will be satisfied with your achievements!
They say:
8. Shopping takes longer.
If you have to hunt up and down the aisles in search of the item you have a coupon for, you'll spend more time at the store. This could also lead you to spend more money, potentially negating the savings you're working so hard to accrue.
I say:
8. Couponing helps you shop FASTER!! I find when I have my list and my coupons all ready to go, I head into that store on a mission. To get in, gather my items quickly and get out. Bc I know the longer I am in that store the more temptations there is to impulse buy. When you change with way you shop you get more familiar with your store and thus are able to get the job done within record time!
The Bottom Line
Yes, you can save a lot of money with coupons, especially when you combine them with sales! There are many savings tools to help this process save you time and to assure you are getting the best price savings!
Sorry, I just had to
The author of that article needs a coupon 101 class.
I will gladly take them under my wing bc they so desperately need to see the light
Thanks so much for sharing this with us..

Great rebuttal, M! Another thing I couldn't help but laugh at when I read this article...the thing about paying $4 for ice cream. I will never, ever pay that because I will just go to my freezer and pull one out where I have 2-3 stockpiled from the last time it was free or close to free after coupon.
Even if you only use coupons to stockpile a few "necessities" for your household (like wipes or toothpaste) you will STILL have enough savings to pay for that newspaper and/or offset printer ink and then some. I buy extra Sunday papers at Dollar Tree (dd is illegal here...sigh) but I justify that in saying that even if I use two $1 coupons from each I've already gotten more savings than I spent in cash. Plus, I'm in the land of doubles, so one $1 coupon is worth $2. It's a win-win.

The person who wrote this might want to do some more research. First of all, I don't "buy" newspapers. I use the money I earn back at the stores to buy my newspapers. Usually I earn money back on stuff I got free in the first place. If I pay $3 for my total and get back $10.50, I would say I'm ahead. So, I get newspapers with money I earn back, use the coupons out of there to get my groceries free or cheap and then earn more money back for my papers the next week. I also print coupons. Do I spend alot of money on ink? Nope! Refill the ink at Walgreens with a coupon. Cost me $6 (about every 2 months). At Walmart it's $20(and only last about a month)! I print coupons on scrap paper..if I have any. Do I buy food we don't use? Nope. There are coupons just about everything. Good couponers are organized and save tons of money without using tons of money. I know what deals are coming out to the stores and coupons that will be in the paper 2 to 3 weeks ahead of time. So, if its a week of stuff I don't need then I don't buy the paper....duh. Bet if this lady lost her high paying job she'd change her story on coupons
Stupid people get on my nerves! If you don't know what your talking about then SHUT UP!
On another note, if people don't want to use coupons because they think its stupid, time wasting, or money wasting then don't do it. More freebies and good deals for the rest of us! So
.
Never heard of that anywhere. That is awesome

I still can't get over the ignorance of it all.
Just like I saw a show the other day about a lady telling people how to save money on groceries. Here they are in Costo stocking up. Costo doesn't accept MQ and I know that route is not the best way. Almost all the "expert's" tips were half backwards..its crazy that people can go out there uneducated preaching to influence others. When in a position of influence its best to at least attempt to bring accurate information..
