What tips do you have to make surviving the back to school season easier?
I have high schoolers now, but on the first day when they bring home all that paperwork and schedules for this and that, band, sports, meetings, etc. I write all the dates in a planner and it sits on the counter/snack bar area for all to see. Now I don't have someone (especially my husband) calling me and asking what the plans are for a certain day or weekend, we are all on the same page (no pun intended, hehe). |

To survive back to school - regular, reliable routine....including dinner, baths, bedtime. Prepare as much as you can the night before (backpacks by the door, pack lunches, lay out clothing).
Between after school and dinner is decompression time. They are allowed to watch PBS cartoons and drink some of the (free) SoBe (thanks CVS) that I accumulated this summer. I don't like snacking so much as we eat dinner earlier than most (5pm)....if they are desperate then dried fruit is an option. My kids like raisins, mangos, craisins, etc. ![]() (^^My kids after school.....) |

*What tips do you have to make surviving the back to school season easier?
i havent found to many tips yet, i have only been doing back to school for 4 years. i am beginning to think the early years have no easy ways. my daughters wasnt bad, she is in 4th grade and she helps out a lot with the younger kids. i have learned to keep lots of crayons and glue sticks on hand. it always amazes me how many are lost in the first month of school. we go through back packs and folders as soon as we get home. homeworkis done before playing is started. everything is put back in book bag as it is completed so no rushing around in the morning when we are tired. **How do you survive the time between after school and dinner? after homework is done, i make the kids pick up their rooms and the living room then they have to go out back and run. i try to have diner ready around 6 or 6:30. if they get hungry before then(and the do) i heat up chickn nuggets or pizza rolls, popcorn is a favorite of the kids but they only get the snack size. i have also been known to have the kids help make a homemade trail mix. we use pretzels, popcorn and any and all open boxes of cereal until it looks evenly balanced.they all get a turn to mix it up. i almost forgot...big fat dill pickles. my 4 year old favorite.

RE: MPS Giveaway: WIN Prize Pack, Backpack, Totinos coupons for free products and MORE!
As a teacher, I have a request for parents getting set for their kids being back to school.
Consider getting a trial sized pack of pain relief for your child and filling out the appropriate paperwork to keep it at school. The worst is being a teacher with a student who has a horrible headache; we aren't allowed by law to give them something for it even if we have it. And sometimes the parents can't get off work to come bring them medication. Many schools will let you provide something and keep it in the office (not in their backpack!). That way your child doesn't have to suffer in pain while we watch helplessly. |

I send a travel first aid kit with my child and refill it with cool band-aids if she needs to share during practices, I also include rolaids or tums for those tummy aches, although those are usually not meant for sharing. I have a high schooler and she is able to have these in her backpack at all times.

RE: MPS Giveaway: WIN Prize Pack, Backpack, Totinos coupons for free products and MORE!
I'm surprised she's allowed to carry rolaids or tums. In a lot of areas it's state law I believe that they can't carry even over the counter medication like that. This is a typical school policy:
"All medications must be given to the School Nurse or an administrator. The only medications that students may carry & self administer are asthma inhalers, diabetes medications and EpiPens. Students need special permission (noted on the medication order form) to carry these items. Please contact the School Nurse for more information. The nurse can give over the counter medications at school only if the parent/guardian permission is given on the health history and emergency contact card (back page) allowing over the counter medications (Advil, Tylenol and Tums) in school." If you're confident your school is an exception to the norm and you've checked it out with them, that's great. A lot of times parents wrongly assume a relatively harmless medication is fine - and I'm just mentioning it because kids can get caught in bad situations due to zero tolerance policies. I'd hate to see that happen to her. |
